The Mother

In all my life

I’ve never felt so wild

and tame

So surrendered to the fact

that life will never

be the same.

Who I was,

Who we were,

Are chapters past

And all this wild heart can think of

Is how to make these fleeting moments last

To hold tighter to his little hand

Sync with his breath

And be his safe place to land

To nurture and nourish

To witness this little one

Flourish

As he widens his eyes

Filled with wonder beyond the womb

and surprise

At the becomings that loom

I’ve never felt so wild

And still

As time fills

With the presence to meet his needs

Little does he know that each beat feeds a part of me

I didn’t know was

hungry

For clarity, simplicity,

A healthy dose of serendipity

Each day a quest

An opportunity

To do and be our best

I’ve never felt so wild

And whole

Every part of me

The carefree

and careful

The bold

and beautiful

Look, now,

to a new head of table

The one who is as loving

as she is stable

Unbridled,

Gracefully wild,

Who sees nothing

as “other,”

She is —

I am —

The mother.
